We all love a good road trip, and we all need one about now! But how much different is a road trip when you are hauling a trailer? Depending on where you are traveling, it can be a lot different. There are many details to think about when pulling a trailer on a long trip. No matter what you are hauling behind you, we know it is precious cargo. So, we want to make sure you get wherever you are headed safe and sound. Follow these tips for traveling with a trailer to make sure your trip is a breeze, and you get there as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Stick to the main roads.

It is always fun to go off the beaten path when you are road tripping, but you may want to avoid this if you are pulling a trailer. Shortcuts and scenic routes are all fun and games until you get on a road that is too rough for your trailer, or in a situation that you do not want your cargo going through. This is especially true if you are in uncharted territories or places you are not familiar with. It is best to stick to the highway and save the backroads for your bike!

Faster is not always better.

On a regular road trip, people often stay in the fast lane and go at least ten over the speed limit. But that should not be the case when you are hauling a trailer. Sticking to the speed limit, and even dropping your speed in certain conditions, is often better for your fuel mileage as well as your trailer and cargo. This way, you make the most out of every overpriced drop of gas! This will also lower your chances of losing control of your trailer if any of those speedsters decide to use your lane as a test track.

Check your trailer regularly.

One of the worst things to encounter on a road trip is a technical problem. Whether that be a flat tire, lousy wire connection that leads to a ticket, or your load shifting, no one wants to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with issues. So, to make sure your trip goes smoothly, check your trailer before leaving and periodically throughout the trip. Every time you stop you should check your trailer. Examine your tires and add air before you begin your trip, make sure all your connections are secure, and all of your cargo is still tied down well and has not shifted.
